Bookshop Digest • January 2025

Welcome to our round-up of all the things we are loving right now. We receive a constant stream of news from the community at the shop and we thought we should share it with you! You'll find here regular updates on happenings down south, food recco's, podcasts, telly and various local finds.

LISTEN: Simple Things by Zero 7

Playing the Simple Things album on repeat at the shop… provokes a floaty kinda mood that migrates you from the January blues

EAT: The Archives, Galle Fort

From the folk behind the Bungalow, European style bistro, great cocktails, tasty food and mood lighting. They even have some nice looking rooms from about 50k per night...

ATTEND: Cane Weaving Workshop

There is an abundance of cane craft in Sri Lanka, ranging in quality, but we thought it would be cool to learn more about the craft and different types of weaves. Sounds like a fun morning and would make for a more informed cane craft purchaser :)
Book a place through @saranasrilanka on Thursday 16th for 5k pp

FOLLOW: @davidhurnphoto

David Hurn has released a collection of gorgeous photos in the form of a book “On Reading”. We particularly enjoyed this sentiment: “One of the things that happens in every country in the world is people read”

ATTEND: Shringar: An Evening of Classical Indian Dance

The Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre is putting on an hour of classical Indian Dance at Galle Literary Festival. Its on Saturday 8th Feb, on the Garden Stage at Lit Market and is totally free to attend!

BUY: Ghost of the Clouded Plains

Beautiful coffee table book capturing the leopards of Horton Plains by Sankha Wanniatchi. Its not just pretty pictures as there is some well written information on leopard behaviours and life in Horton Plains National Park.
This feels very specially Sri Lankan to us and we hope to see more leopard content
