The Hungry Tide

The story brings together three people from different worlds: Piyali Roy (an Indian-American cetologist who arrives to study a rare river dolphin), Kanai Dutt (a sophisticated Delhi-based translator), and Fokir (a local, illiterate fisherman). Their paths converge in this volatile, tidal landscape where inhabitants constantly face threats from deadly tigers, rising tides, and the precariousness of life itself. As they explore the tidal backwaters, the trio is drawn into the hidden history of the region, including the real-life Morichjhãpi massacre of 1979, where the government forcibly evicted thousands of Bangladeshi refugees. The novel explores the fraught balance between wildlife conservation and human survival in a place where nature is both revered and terrifying.
